Avens Alaska - Slana

Overview

Off-grid wilderness lodge 28 miles into Wrangell-St. Elias National Park with gourmet meals

Cabins and Yurts

Avens Alaska in Slana offers five types of accommodations: the Raven cabin, Alaskan cabin, Ursa Major yurt, Orion's yurt, and Foxs Den. Each unit includes a kitchenette, pellet stove, and access to a private or shared wash house with hot showers. The Raven cabin features a screened-in porch and an en-suite bathroom, while the Foxs Den is a dry cabin with running water provided via a pump bottle.

On-Site Dining

Guests can add a meal plan that includes breakfast, dinner, and packed lunches. Dinners served at the lodge feature dishes such as bison bourguignon, Mediterranean stuffed chicken, and cod in coconut curry sauce, all made with locally sourced ingredients. The kitchen uses a 100-year-old sourdough starter and serves firewood ice cream for dessert.

Location & Outdoor Activities

The property sits at mile 28 of Nabesna Road, a lightly developed area of Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. Nearby trails include Caribou Creek Trail, Gold Mine Trail, and the hike to Rambler Mine, a historic mining camp. A canoe is available for guest use on Jack Lake, where swans, eagles, and ducks are often seen.

Guest Services & Amenities

Hosts Michael and Victoria Rego manage the lodge year-round and provide local hiking advice, shuttle service to remote trailheads, and vehicle support for stream crossings. The off-grid property runs on solar panels and generators, with Wi-Fi available despite the remote location. Free on-site private parking is offered, and pets are allowed on the premises.

Family-Friendly Features

Children are welcome at the lodge, and the Rego family's own children help serve meals and share their life in the Alaskan wilderness. The Raven cabin includes a screened-in porch and sleeping for up to four people, while the Alaskan cabin accommodates a family of four with two queen beds. Homemade cocoa with fresh whipped cream and kid-friendly meal options like pasta are available on request.
